Silver Shadow Cruise Review
Itinerary: Alaska Inside Passage & Glaciers - August 2013
We are...family of six, all adults. Called Linda for the very small ships but realized that my parents needed an elevator due to my Dad's leg issues. We went back and forth between Regent and Silversea. Read everything, did our homework, had Linda educate us and we made our choice.
Liked the smaller ship. We liked that we would pick our own excursions and others on them would be like minded. Not a free for all as we were worried about on Regent. Wild people running from free excursion to free excursion. Not sure that is how it works but just our impression.
Sailed out of Anchorage. Necessary to come in a day early, Silversea put us at the Hilton, nice hotel well located. Early AM they transferred us to the train station for the 4/12 hour ride to Seward. Very fun exiting way to start the trip.
Our first view of the ship was magnificent. The sky was part clouds and a ray of sun was shinning right on our ship, almost magical. It was a full ship but was not at all crowed, lots of open deck and inside space. All cabins are absolutely huge compared to other ships. We were both in Veranda 4 Cabins and our cabins were gorgeous around 350 sq ft plus balcony. Loved the location, mid ship on Deck 8.
We loved our Butler, and cabin steward, we felt very pampered and taken care of. Little things, ice in the bucket, refrigerator stocked to our liking. My husband asked for Alaskan Beer our first day, and the rest of the week he had it automatically in the refrig.
Alaska is gorgeous from sailing out of Seward to the open sea. We enjoyed every port we visited. We did a combo of Silversea excursions and others that Linda booked for us privately through her land partner. Helicopter and dog sledding expensive for sure, and worth the price. We were educated before we came into port. We attended all the lectures on Alaska and found them to be excellent...
- Juneau - booked through Linda, glacier helicopter and dogsled - Red Dog Saloon
- Ketchikan - Zipline - Berring Sea Cruise - walked around totem park
- Skagway - what a hoot - Whitepass Railroad - whole town is hoot
- Sikta - Totem Blite Park - Rapture Center - fishing.kayak
Overall, we thought a good value for the five star service. Food was delicious at every turn, way to much of it. Staff well trained and enthusiastic willing to help. Cabin lovely. Alaska spectacular. Sign me up again.....thanks for all your help.
