Atlantic Coastal Cruise Reviews: American SpiritNew England Islands - August 2007Red, white and blue is the theme. One of the few American owned and operated cruise lines. Our ship, the American Spirit had 100 passengers and was rather new having been built in 2005. We had a lovely cabin on the Carolina Deck with a small balcony, which we thought was definitely worth the extra few dollars. We had our 21-year-old daughter with us in a single cabin. The price was very reasonable after leaning about single prices on other ships. Megan enjoyed herself with the older crowd and became friends with many of the young crew. We did have a 10 year old traveling with her Grandmother and she seemed to be having the time of her life. No bingo, no jewelry shops, no drink of the day, no conga lines, no midnight buffets. Instead we had a wonderful itinerary along the east coast visiting old fishing villages, Whaling Museums as well as magnificent Newport, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. We had a lecture some nights to prepare us for the next day. We had casual meals as we were docked along the waterfront in each town. Back on the ship after an eventful day of sightseeing, we had cocktails and dinner before we pulled out to sea again. We were ashore all day everyday. We signed up for shore excursions, which seemed to focus on history and culture and took us to the most beautiful spots in each place. Cocktail hour was always 5:30 and everyone was there sharing their experiences of the day. We met a couple from our hometown and we found we had friends in common. What a small world it is. Food was good and varied. My daughter who is very picky eater seemed to do fine. After dinner we enjoyed a lecture about the area we had just traveled or would be traveling the next day. After seven days we felt rested and learned a lot along with wonderful family time with our daughter. Speaking with other passengers who have been on prior sailings we are now interested in a fall foliage tour for next year. Thank you for all your help |
