For intrepid photographers, Alaska is the gold standard for untamed landscape and wildlife photography. Often referred to as the last great North American wilderness for nature photographers, it is frequently compared to Africa's Serengeti for it's diversity of wildlife. From bald eagles to caribou to whales, every aspect of the landscape offers its own treasure trove of wildlife.

One of the best ways to experience and photograph Alaska is on a small-ship adventure cruise, which offers up close experiences to places that are far from any town or road, and where the larger cruise ships can't reach. These well-equipped vessels are the ideal platform for photographers. Most are outfitted with inflatable Zodiac landing craft for exploring remote places, and some have sea kayaks for getting an even more intimate look. Joining a specially designed photo expedition or photo safari cruise offers an affordable alternative to being trapped on a large cruise ship with a tight and inflexible schedule.
