Lindblad Expeditions, in Partnership with National Geographic

This Baja California Land and Sea Photo Retreat offers a rare chance to explore an eco-playground of pure wildness with some of the world’s best shooters—National Geographic photographers. Spend three nights at an exclusive resort, a playground for the Hollywood elite during the golden age of film and exclusively reserved. Then, embark on the 62-guest National Geographic Sea Bird for four nights of exploring the Sea of Cortez and putting your new photography skills to the test.

Spend an afternoon with a National Geographic photographer or an image-editing specialist from B&H photo/Video getting pro tips, or take a kayak for a paddle along a peaceful shoreline. Non-photographers or those with only a passing interest will find tremendous opportunities at Rancho Las Cruces: hillside hikes with naturalists, snorkeling off the beach, and even seeing the former private homes of Hollywood elite like Bing Crosby and Desi Arnaz.

You’ll be able to hike every day through forests of towering cacti and up striking desert canyons. You’ll take Zodiacs along the shore to see and shoot photos of plunge-diving pelicans and blue-footed boobies, and each day you’ll have the option to walk or kayak, and to join a different naturalist as you choose: there are no assigned groups.

Shoot photos with National Geographic photographers Flip Nicklin and Ralph Lee Hopkins.

Day-to-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Los Angeles/La Paz/Rancho Las Cruces

Fly into La Paz or Los Cabos and transfer to Rancho Las Cruces. (D)

Day 2-3 — Rancho Las Cruces

Begin your days with sunrise photography sessions followed by workshops designed for what you’ll encounter on the voyage – composition, light, workflow and editing. In the evenings we’ll practice long exposures and “painting” cacti with light to create unique shots. Kayak pristine waters, hike with a naturalist and see endemic flora, or horseback ride. Learn about regional art and artifacts of ancient civilizations from local expert Enrique Hambleton, as well as the incredible history of Rancho Las Cruces from the owners.

With special permission, we’ll tour the homes of Bing Crosby and Desi Arnaz, with its guitar-shaped pool, and the property’s chapel. On our final night, enjoy a farewell dinner and performances from a local jazz trio and dance troupe. (B,L,D)

Day 4 — Rancho Las Cruces/La Paz/Embark

Start the day with specialized instruction to prepare for your photography and editing in the field. Then embark National Geographic Sea Bird and begin exploring the Sea of Cortez, with an afternoon hike or kayak at a nearby island. (B,L,D)

Day 5 — Isla Santa Catalina

Search the waters south of Isla Carmen for whales and bottlenose and common dolphins. Hike a forest of towering cacti, snorkel or swim at Isla Santa Catalina. (B,L,D)

Day 6 — Exploring the Sea of Cortez

With nature as our guide and cameras on hand, we’ll explore the Bahía Loreto Marine Reserve, a rich area for whales and dolphins. We’ll anchor at Isla San Jose or a nearby island with a dramatic shoreline to explore by kayak and snorkel in bays of turquoise waters. Enjoy a beach barbeque underneath a starry sky. (B,L,D)

Day 7 — Los Islotes/Isla Espíritu Santo

Experience the delight of snorkeling with curious sea lions at Los Islotes. An indented shoreline and dramatic cliffs make Isla Espíritu Santo among the Sea of Cortez’s most beautiful islands, ideal for photography. Enjoy the views as you kayak, snorkel or relax on deck at leisure. (B,L,D)

Day 8 — La Paz/Disembark/Los Angeles

Ships

National Geographic Sea Bird / Sea Lion

National Geographic Sea Bird / Sea LionOur twin expedition ships, National Geographic Sea Bird and National Geographic Sea Lion, can reach places inaccessible to larger ships due to their small size, yet each comfortably accommodates 62 guests in 31 outside cabins. The feeling, we’re told, is often compared to that of a large private yacht, with everyone integral to the adventure. Accessibility means freedom. Our captains have decades of sailing experience in the regions we explore. They know when and where to navigate so that you feel the places we visit are all ours. View ship details...
