American Cruise Lines

Let us bring the spectacular fall foliage to you as we sail the Hudson River surrounded by the Catskill Mountains on the western shore and the Taconic and Berkshire Hills to the east. Begin and end your voyage in the most vibrant, stimulating city in the world, New York, docking in Manhattan with the enticements of renowned art and history museums, and a culture that is unsurpassed. Come settle into your spacious stateroom and enjoy the sights that Henry Hudson first experienced in 1607.

Spend your days cruising serenely past the imposing Palisades and the rolling, brilliantly-colored hills that inspired the painters of the Hudson River School. At each stop you’ll find an historic shore excursion: tour the impressive grounds of West Point Academy, where famous generals once trod —Patton, MacArthur and Eisenhower, as well as the infamous George Custer; take in Albany’s magnificent architecture befitting the capital of the Empire State; step into the legend and lore surrounding the colonial hamlet of Sleepy Hollow, which was forever immortalized by America’s first celebrity author, Washington Irving. See the home in which he wrote many classics, Sunnyside, a National Historic Landmark and, nearby, one of New York’s finest Gothic Revival mansions, Lyndhurst, which is operated by the National Trust.

From the observation decks of American Cruise Lines’ ships, passengers can view unparalleled vistas of landscapes and history. You’ll be amazed by the palatial estates and superb mansions of Millionaire’s Row, where nineteenth century captains of industry built their summer retreats. Amid the glorious autumnal beauty of the countryside you’ll visit the rejuvenated artistic city of Kingston or perhaps you’ll decide to tour Frederic Church’s fantastic "castle," Olana. Consider joining an excursion to Hyde Park, the location of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Springwood, the family estate that hosted many of his radio Fireside Chats. Whatever you choose on this seasonal journey, you’re assured a unique experience and extraordinary memories.

Well organized all the way. We had a great time. The fall foliage was beautiful.

Day-to-Day Itinerary

Day 1 - New York, NY / Lincoln Harbor, NJ

After boarding your ship in New York City, enjoy a delightful afternoon of cruising along the Hudson River to Lincoln Harbor, New Jersey.

Day 2 - Troy / Albany, NY

The picturesque region of what is today the city of Albany was discovered by Henry Hudson in 1609 on a failed attempt to find a quick passage to China for the Dutch East India Company. Today the capital city of New York state welcomes visitors with majestic architecture and grand views of the beautiful Hudson River Valley. Be sure to explore the New York State Museum and the newly renovated State Capitol building, originally built in the late 1800's.

Day 3 - West Point, NY

Steeped in history and tradition, the United States Military Academy at West Point offers visitors the opportunity to walk on the grandiose grounds once trekked by some of the nation's greatest generals, like Patton, Eisenhower and MacArthur. Founded in 1802 by an act of Congress, the Academy has been of significant military importance to America since Revolutionary days. Tour the West Point Museum and Cadet Chapel and view magnificent vistas of the Hudson Valley from atop the campus grounds.

Day 4 - Kingston, NY / Catskill, NY

With the invention of the steamboat in 1807, the Hudson River became a waterway of leisurely travel with literally hundreds of vessels making their way up and down the picturesque passage. Originally the capital of New York in the late 1700's, today Kingston preserves the maritime heritage of the Hudson River at the Hudson River Maritime Museum. Kingston is also located in an area of the Hudson River often referred to as "Millionaires Row" - with palatial estates and grand mansions reminiscent of the mid-1800's when wealthy New York businessmen began buying property in the beautiful valley for summer retreats. In Catskill, visit the Clarmont State Historic Site, home to Robert Livingston Jr., first minister of foregin affairs who negotiated the Louisiana Purchase and helped draft the Declaration of Independence.

Day 5 - Poughkeepsie, NY

Spared from battle during the Revolutionary War, Poughkeepsie became the second capital of New York. In the 1800’s, due to the area’s natural beauty and proximity to New York City, families such as the Astors and Vanderbilts built palatial weekend homes nearby. Hyde Park, located just north, was the birthplace of U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt. His estate, Springwood, is now the site of the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site.

Day 6 - Sleepy Hollow, NY

The riverside town of Sleepy Hollow is forever immortalized in the works of one of the country's first great writers, Washington Irving. The author found inspiration in the tales and scenery of the Hudson Valley as the basis for "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle." Today Washington Irving's country home, Sunnyside, is a Registered National Historic Landmark and welcomes visitors with legends and lore.

Day 7 - New York City, NY

Discover the sights, sounds and history of this extraordinary city! From South Street Seaport to Central Park and the Museum of Natural History, New York encapsulates the culture and spirit of America. Explore the Big Apple on your own, or join a narrated tour of the city's biggest landmarks.

Cruise Reviews

American Glory - October 2007

Hudson River Fall FoliageNo pictures could show the pallet of colors that we experienced through the leaves and foliage of this trip. I got the most kick out of the sidewalks and the array of beautiful fallen leaves. Harold took more pictures than you can imagine. He spends hours in the basement going through them and creating a memory book for our grandson. Yes we brought some leaves home with us. We have discovered the color fades. Being from Las Vegas we do not know such things.
