Kapitan Khlebnikov

During this 17-day icebreaker expedition we intend shore landings on Franz Josef Land, the most northerly group of islands in Europes, in Svalbard, an archipelago inhabited by only four species of land mammals and in a UNESCO international biosphere reserve, Northeast Greenland National Park. In true expedition-style, the daily adventures will unfold in response to local conditions, infusing this voyage with exhilarating surprise!

Itinerary

Day 1 — Helsinki, Finland
Your spend the first night of this expedition in Helsinki, Finland, the sophisticated, national capital.

Day 2 — Embarkation Day
We transfer you as part of a group from the hotel to the airport for the flight to Murmansk, Russia. We'll transfer you from the airport to the icebreaker at anchor in the port.

Day 3-4 — The Barents Sea
The Barents Sea supports a profusion of wildlife, including whales, dolphins and fish. The Expedition Team will prepare you for sighting wildlife during formal and informal presentations.

Day 5-7 — Franz Josef Land
The largely uninhabited archipelago lies between the latitudes of 80 and 81 degrees north. You may be as close as 900 km (560 miles) to the North Pole when you go ashore. We plan to visit former polar exploration bases and an outpost from the Cold War.

Day 8-10 — Svalbard en route to Greenland
En route to Greenland we will visit the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard. The variety of seabirds and marine mammals that inhabit the cliffs and surrounding waters is diverse. Don't go to bed early - this is a great opportunity to experience the midnight sun.

Day 11-15 — Eastern Greenland
Wilder, more rugged and often icebound, the eastern coastline of Greenland is the habitat of walrus, four species of seals and the polar bears that live there. Patience, perseverance and a long lens may result in once-in-a-lifetime photographs to share with family and friends.

Northeast Greenland National Park is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve larger than the state of Texas. Forty-percent of the world's population of musk oxen are believed to live within the park boundaries.

As we sail south, the icebreaker will explore King Oscar Fjord and Scoresby Sund. Kapitan Khlebnikov is the only expedition ship equipped with helicopters for flight-seeing to visit the picturesque fjords.

Day 16-17 — Denmark Strait to Reykjavik
You may already be planning your next Arctic expedition as we cross the Greenland Sea and Denmark Strait to historic Reykjavik, Iceland, where you will disembark.
